How a Full Spectrum LED Lamp Works

A full spectrum LED grow light is just a marketing term which means that your grow light really closely resembles natural sunlight. This marketing term first came about as a result of research done in the 1980s, where scientists were looking for an effective way to make plants more visible from space. This was especially useful for researchers who were working on satellite imaging of Earth as it meant that plants could be located and identified by the naked eye.

Spectrum refers to the different colors of the light emitted by the photovoltaic cells that make up your LEDs. A common misconception among many gardeners is that they need to use only one type of spectrum. That couldn't be further from the truth because a wide spectrum LED grow lights can actually produce a better quality of light than a low or medium spectrum LED grow lights.

A lot of people don't realize that the spectrum is not only related to the quality of the light but also to the level of efficiency of the LED. The lower the light intensity at which the LED is working, the more energy it is using. In contrast, the higher the intensity at which the LED works, the more energy it is using and the less efficient it is.

A typical LED spectrum is between 400-600 nanometers, which are about twice as long as the human hair. This means that the high end products would be much brighter in color than the low end products. However, this does not mean that the quality of the light produced will suffer with the higher frequency LEDs as they still work hard to achieve the highest brightness possible.

There are two types of LEDs: those which are considered 'high-frequency' and those which are considered 'low-frequency'. High frequency LEDs have a longer life span than low frequency LEDs. They tend to eat more, so they are more suitable for small gardens.

High-frequency LEDs are also very efficient, though it will take some time to achieve the same level of efficiency as low-frequency LEDs. So, if you are thinking about purchasing a full spectrum LED grow lamp you should look at the high-frequency ones first before taking in the low-frequency ones. This way, you will end up with a lamp which is more efficient but not as bright as the low-frequency ones.
